This webinar explores a sustainable solution for extending the longevity of constructed bridge decks through the use of overlay systems made with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), a state-of-the-art construction material. The research examines the interactive mechanisms between bridge decks and UHPC overlays, with particular attention to the degree of composite action between the two. Through theoretical studies encompassing a range of material and geometric properties, the work aims to develop practical guidelines for bridge engineers and government officials responsible for bridge management. The presentation will be led by Wajdi Ammar, a PhD student at the University of Colorado Denver, alongside Dr. Jimmy Kim, Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver and President of the Bridge Engineering Institute. Attendees will gain insight into cutting-edge approaches to bridge deck rehabilitation and preservation using advanced composite materials.
